Altai Tourism is Developing Rapidly

Altai’s tourism industry is experiencing rapid growth, attracting increasing numbers of visitors to its remote and breathtaking landscapes. Recently, explorer Alexey Kotelnikov completed a tour of the Altai region, sharing insights into its key attractions.

The journey included visits to the Sofia Glacier, the Chikhachev ridge, and other notable locations. Kotelnikov highlighted the accessibility of Gorno-Altaysk, though venturing into the region’s more remote areas requires dedication.

The beginning of May offers a unique spectacle: the flowering of maralnik, transforming the mountain slopes into a “lilac sea.” Tourists can also experience local culture through events like kok-boru, a traditional Altai game involving riders competing for a goat carcass. This game has evolved with structured rules and ends with a festive meal.

Traveling deeper into the Altai Mountains, solitude increases, with fewer signs of civilization. The Sofia Glacier, one of the region’s largest, is a sight to behold, though it is experiencing melting. The glacier’s massive ice formation and surrounding peaks create a dramatic landscape.

The South Chuysky Range offers panoramic views and a sense of freedom due to its vast, open spaces. The Chikhachev ridge, located at the border of Russia and Mongolia, presents a rugged, high-altitude environment. The Kurai ridge, with its diverse vegetation and stunning views of the Chuya and Kurai steppes, further enhances the region’s appeal.
