Quincy Promes, the former Spartak Moscow forward, has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands. This extradition follows multiple legal issues the footballer has faced in his home country.
Promes, who played for Spartak Moscow from 2014 to 2018 and again from 2021, has a complex legal history. He was initially sentenced to 18 months in prison in the summer of 2023 for assaulting his cousin with a knife. Later, in February 2024, he received a six-year prison sentence for drug smuggling.
Despite these convictions, Promes remained a Spartak player. He was detained at Dubai airport in February 2024 while with the team at a winter training camp in the UAE and subsequently failed to return to Russia. The detention stemmed from his involvement in a car accident where he left the scene.
After spending two months in a Dubai prison, he was released on bail but barred from leaving the UAE. His contract with Spartak Moscow expired in the summer of 2024, and he then played for Dubai United in the second division during the 2024/25 season. Appeals have been filed against both sentences, but if the punishments are upheld, Promes may not be released before 2030.
Throughout his career, Promes achieved significant success in Russia. He is the top scorer in the Russian championship among foreign players, having played 235 matches for Spartak and scored 114 goals. He also represented the Netherlands national team in 50 matches, scoring seven goals.
