A military unit in the village of Sredny, Usolsky district, in the Irkutsk region, was attacked by drones on the evening of June 1st, marking the first such incident in Siberia. The attack prompted a response from local authorities and security services.
Governor Igor Kobzev confirmed the UAV attack, stating that one drone struck an old building in Novomaltinsk. The exact number of drones involved is still being determined.
Following the attack, operational and security services, including FSB officers, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Rosgvardia fighters, were deployed to the scene. Authorities have blocked the launch site, identified as a truck, causing a traffic jam of over 6 kilometers on the R-255 “Siberia” highway.
The highway in the Sredny area was temporarily closed due to the drone threat. Uprdor “Pribaikalye” suggested an alternate route through Novomaltinsk.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The Federal Security Service for the Irkutsk Region is currently investigating the circumstances.
The mayor of the Usolsky district, Vitaly Matyukha, appealed to residents for information about suspicious vehicles seen in the area of Malta, near Sredny, providing contact numbers for the police and emergency services.
The Usolsky district now represents the easternmost point in Russia targeted by enemy drones, previously held by the Republic of Tatarstan.
The village of Sredny, located approximately 18 kilometers from Usolye-Sibirskoye and 75 kilometers from Irkutsk, is home to about 4.8 thousand people. The Belaya military airfield is situated about 4 kilometers from the village.
Authorities have issued safety recommendations for residents in the event of a drone attack, including seeking shelter, avoiding fallen UAVs, and taking cover if a drone drops altitude or releases ammunition.
