A military unit in the village of Sredny, Usolsky district, Irkutsk Oblast, was attacked by a drone on the evening of June 1st. This marks the first time a region in Siberia has been affected by a drone attack.
Governor Igor Kobzev confirmed the attack in his Telegram channel, stating that a UAV had dropped on an old building in Novomaltinsk. The exact number of UAVs involved is still being determined.
Operational and law enforcement services, including FSB officers, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Rosgvardia soldiers, have been deployed to the scene.
Authorities have blocked the source from which the drones were launched, which they identified as a truck. This led to a significant traffic jam on the R-255 “Siberia” highway, stretching from the outskirts of Sredny to the bridge over the Belaya River.
Due to the drone threat, the highway in the Sredny area was temporarily closed. Uprdor “Pribaikalye” suggested using the regional road through Novomaltinsk as an alternative route.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The mayor of the Usolsky district, Vitaly Matyukha, has requested that residents share any information about suspicious vehicles seen in the area of Malta, a village near Sredny. Contact information for the police and Unified Dispatch Service of the Usolsky district has been provided.
The village of Sredny is located about 18 kilometers from Usolye-Sibirskoye and 75 kilometers from Irkutsk and is home to approximately 4,800 people.
The Belaya military airfield is situated approximately 4 kilometers from the village.
In the event of witnessing a drone attack, the operational headquarters in the Irkutsk Oblast recommends leaving the visibility zone, seeking shelter in a building or under a tree, and if the altitude drops or ammunition is dropped, running aside and lying on the ground, covering your head with your hands. They also advise against touching fallen UAVs or their parts due to the risk of explosion or poisonous substances.
