St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2025: Observations and Discussions

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 commenced with a focus on navigating global uncertainties, showcasing technological advancements, and addressing socio-economic challenges. The event, drawing 20,000 representatives from 140 countries, including a delegation from the Taliban, took place at the “Expoforum” territory in St. Petersburg.

Organizationally, the forum appeared more streamlined compared to the previous year, with smoother PCR testing and minimal entrance queues. SMS notifications kept participants informed, and bells signaled when speakers exceeded their time. However, the relocation of the press center and intermittent internet connectivity posed some challenges. Restaurant prices within the forum venue had also increased noticeably.

A prominent theme was the comparison of modern sanctions against Russians to the Aryanization policies of Nazi Germany. Publicist Vladimir Sergienko argued that Russians are being punished simply for being Russian, drawing parallels to the destruction of economic rights of Jews. He cited examples of account closures and contract terminations based on Russian citizenship as evidence of “Aryanization 2.0.”

Discussions at the Valdai Club session centered on “stability in a world of uncertainty,” with a focus on the increasing use of force in international relations. Participants noted a shift away from pretexts based on human rights compliance, emphasizing a new global reality.

Technological advancements, particularly in unmanned systems, were also highlighted. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Vasily Shpak presented a “dronification” rating of Russian regions, while Dmitry Peskov proposed the term “drononomics.” Yuri Kozarenko acknowledged that drones are currently part of the war economy but expressed hope for their future use in business after the resolution of the special military operation.

The return of foreign business to Russia was debated, with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov emphasizing the need for “smart investments” that create new technological competencies and are controlled by Russian beneficiaries. President of PJSC “Rostelecom” Mikhail Oseevsky expressed skepticism about allowing European and American developers back into the Russian market.

Socio-economic issues, including birth rates and traditional values, were also addressed. Anastasia Stolkova highlighted the need for a more supportive dialogue in women’s clinics, while Oleg Apolikhin suggested mandatory pre-marriage examinations for couples. Metropolitan Nikandr lamented the negative connotations associated with “patriotism” and “values,” proposing the inclusion of traditional values on school notebooks.

The forum also showcased various exhibits, including military vehicles, regional developments in healthcare and prosthetics, and personalized labubu figures of public figures.
