Natalia Tenyakova: A Life Dedicated to Theater and Love

Natalia Tenyakova, a renowned Russian actress known for her dedication to theater and her enduring love story with Sergei Yursky, passed away shortly before her 81st birthday. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, including parental disapproval, professional obstacles, and health issues, Tenyakova remained committed to her craft and her family.

Born in 1944, Tenyakova defied her parents’ expectations by secretly enrolling in the State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography. Her talent was recognized early on by her supervisor, Boris Zon, who saw her potential despite criticisms about her appearance and voice. During her studies, she briefly married Lev Dodin before realizing her true feelings for actor Sergei Yursky.

Tenyakova’s life took a significant turn when she reunited with Yursky at the Bolshoi Drama Theater. Their connection was undeniable, leading Yursky to end his previous relationship. The couple married in 1970 and had a daughter, Daria, who also became an actress.

As Yursky faced professional setbacks due to his perceived dissidence, Tenyakova supported him by moving from Leningrad to Moscow and joining the Moscow Art Theater. She remained dedicated to her work, valuing achievement over self-promotion.

In 1986, Tenyakova made a memorable appearance in the film “Love and Doves,” where she played Baba Shura, a role that showcased her talent for comedic acting. Despite renewed interest in her film career, she remained primarily a theater actress, dedicating her time to her husband and daughter.

Following Yursky’s death in 2019 after 50 years of marriage, Tenyakova found solace in her work. Even as her health declined, she continued to perform, planning to appear in “9th row. 10th, 11th place” at the Moscow Art Theater shortly before her passing. Natalia Tenyakova’s legacy as a talented actress and devoted partner will be remembered by her colleagues, fans, and loved ones.
