Football Club Khimki Announces Suspension of Sports Activities

FC Khimki has announced the suspension of its sports activities, citing insufficient measures to ensure sustainability under RFU and RPL regulations. The club, founded in 1997, expressed gratitude to players, coaches, staff, fans, and partners for their dedication. This pause is described as a forced but balanced step in the current circumstances.

The announcement follows a season where Khimki finished 12th in the Russian championship but was denied a license to participate in the next RPL season, despite an appeal. Financial troubles, including debts and a fraud case involving the main investor, Tufan Sadygov, contributed to the club’s difficulties.

Former Khimki president Andrei Chervichenko suggests the club could return under a different name, utilizing the existing infrastructure. He proposed registering a new team, possibly named “Khimki+” or “Khimki-,” and working their way up from lower leagues.

Insider reports indicate that players are already seeking opportunities elsewhere, with Lucas Vera reportedly signing with Lokomotiv and Anton Zabolotny potentially joining Spartak. The club’s financial problems included debts on player salaries, leading to player strikes and the introduction of external management. Despite the RPL providing funds to address wage arrears, the club ultimately faced suspension.
