The State Duma has issued a warning about the heightened risk of contracting tuberculosis (TB) through the use of hookahs. According to Badma Bashankaev, First Deputy Chairman of the Health Protection Committee, hookahs are a significant mode of transmission for the infectious disease, particularly in regions like Central Asia and the Middle East.

Bashankaev emphasized that inadequate hygiene practices concerning hookah pipes are the primary cause for concern. While flasks and heating elements are typically cleaned and replaced regularly, the plastic or silicone pipes are often neglected, creating a breeding ground for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The parliamentarian further highlighted the substantial health risks associated with hookah smoking, equating a single session to smoking an entire pack of cigarettes. He stressed that this is particularly true for larger hookahs, which contain high concentrations of nicotine.
