Olivier Roy, a Canadian from Montreal, has chosen to live in Saratov, Russia, with his wife Valeria, who is originally from the city. Despite Saratov’s history of population decline due to migration, Olivier finds appeal in the city, particularly its connection to the Volga River and the entrepreneurial spirit of its youth.
Olivier’s journey to Russia began during his undergraduate studies when he received a grant to study in St. Petersburg. He was captivated by the city’s architecture and culture. Despite initial concerns from his relatives about safety in Russia, Olivier pursued further studies in Kazan and eventually married Valeria.
After graduation, the couple lived in Canada for three years, but Olivier grew disillusioned with what he perceived as a decline in public relations, an increase in migration, and rising crime rates. He also expressed concern over cases of parental rights being revoked for not supporting a child’s gender transition. Olivier believes that Russia places a greater emphasis on children’s development and well-being.
The Volga River was a major factor in Olivier’s decision to settle in Saratov. He appreciates the river’s beauty and believes it gives the city a unique character. He also sees potential in Saratov’s developing infrastructure and the dynamism of its young entrepreneurs, who are working to improve the city.
Olivier has several occupations, including translation, editing, blogging, and consulting for foreigners moving to Russia. His long-term ambition is to become a farmer. He appreciates the connection to nature and the possibility of growing his own food, although his wife has reservations about rural life.
