Giant Snails Spotted in Moscow Parks Worry Residents

Muscovites have reported an increase in the presence of large snails in city parks, causing concern among residents and gardeners. The recent rains are suspected to have contributed to the surge in the mollusk population.

While some city dwellers are merely taking pictures of the snails, those with gardens outside the city are reporting significant damage. The snails are voracious eaters, consuming plants and leaving behind only tattered remains. Residents of Balashikha have noted that the mollusks are actively targeting their crops.

Some Muscovites are concerned that these may not be ordinary grape snails, which are common in Moscow. They worry that the brightly colored orange snails might carry diseases.

Experts say that these snails are generally not harmful. They play a role in the ecosystem by consuming decaying leaves.

In addition to the snails, residents have also reported an increase in the number of Spanish slugs in local parks. This is a recurring issue from last year, and residents are bracing themselves for another season of battling the invasive species.
