A bridge collapse in the Bryansk region of Russia on June 1st led to the derailment of a train traveling from Klimovo to Moscow, resulting in seven fatalities and 33 injuries.
The incident occurred on a railway line situated beneath the collapsed bridge. Rescue operations are ongoing, involving nearly 200 personnel working to extract people from the carriages.
Among the injured are three children, with one child requiring air ambulance transport to Moscow for specialized medical care. Tragically, a one-year-old child was reported missing at the disaster site, prompting an intensive search by the Ministry of Emergency Situations. A truck driver is also among the victims.
The Transport Prosecutor’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the bridge collapse. The Moscow Railway has reported that the train derailed due to “illegal interference with transport activities,” though further details remain unclear.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations has stated that rescue efforts are primarily focused on locating and freeing individuals trapped in the wreckage. Dozens of medical professionals are providing on-site support. Passengers who did not require medical attention were initially transported to a temporary accommodation center, but were subsequently moved to a specially arranged train to Moscow, where they will receive medical and psychological assistance.
The incident has caused significant traffic disruptions, with a multi-kilometer traffic jam forming on the A-240 highway. Traffic on the highway remains blocked as rescuers utilize approximately 60 pieces of equipment, including engineering vehicles and cranes.
Regional authorities have established an operations center to manage the response. Russian Railways has also convened a headquarters led by the company’s head, and a headquarters is operational at the situational-information center of the Ministry of Transport.
