Baltic Plant to Construct Marine Terminal on Turukhtanny Islands

The Baltic Shipbuilding Mechanical Plant is set to construct a new marine terminal on the Turukhtanny Islands. The project, outlined in draft territorial planning schemes, has received approval from Rosmorrechflot and is slated for completion in 2025.

The new bulk cargo terminal will have a capacity of 5 million tons of cargo per year, doubling the current capacity of 2.5 million tons. This expansion is part of the Long-Term Development Program of FSUE Rosmorport for 2017–2030, highlighting its strategic importance for modernizing the region’s port infrastructure.

The need for the terminal arises from the “increased production of mineral fertilizers and increased demand in foreign markets,” with potassium chloride forming the primary cargo base. The project represents a significant investment of 20 billion rubles and aims to contribute substantially to regional and national budgets.

Upon reaching full capacity, the terminal is expected to generate approximately 800 jobs. Over its 30-year operational lifespan, it’s projected to contribute up to 21 billion rubles to budgets at all levels.

Environmental considerations are a key focus, with measures in place to minimize the terminal’s impact. These include closed transport galleries, dust suppression systems, low-noise equipment with sound insulation, and advanced treatment facilities. Ship-loading machines will also be equipped with specialized nozzles to capture dust during loading.
