At least four people are dead and dozens injured after a road bridge collapsed onto a railway line in the Bryansk region of Russia on May 31, causing a passenger train to derail. The incident occurred near the village of Vygonichi as a train traveling from Klimov to Moscow approached the area.
The Moscow Railway reported that the locomotive and carriages of passenger train No. 86 derailed at 22:44 on the Pilshino — Vygonichi section due to the bridge collapse, citing “illegal interference in transport operations” as the cause.
Rescuers are actively working at the scene, extracting passengers from the wreckage. Among the injured is a five-month-old baby who was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reports that the number of injured has reached 31.
Bryansk region Governor Alexander Bogomaz stated that all injured individuals are being taken to medical facilities in the region. He added that air ambulance transportation to Moscow is available for seriously injured patients if deemed necessary by doctors.
Emergency services are on-site, and the Transport Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident. While the Prosecutor’s Office also mentioned “illegal interference in transport activities,” the exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
A temporary accommodation center has been established for the train’s passengers. Recovery trains have been dispatched to manage the aftermath of the derailment.
The incident has resulted in a significant traffic jam in the area. Train traffic has been suspended.
