Be Cautious When Applying for a Visa

Travelers are urged to exercise caution when applying for visas due to an increase in fraudulent schemes targeting applicants. Scammers are exploiting the high demand for visas by offering expedited services and guaranteed approvals, often through fake websites and intermediaries.

The Russian Union of Travel Industry (RST) and visa operator VFS Global have reported a rise in visa fraud cases, reminding applicants that no third party can guarantee visa approval. The public is advised to be wary of unofficial entities promising quick or certain visa issuance.

Scammers often promise fast-tracked appointments and guaranteed approvals for a fee. Vladimir Kuznetsov, Chairman of the All-Russian Trade Union of Mediators, warns that these schemes can involve fake websites, demands for personal data and advance payments, and contracts with vague terms. Submitting forged documents can result in visa refusal, entry bans, or even legal repercussions.

To avoid scams, applicants should only contact authorized visa centers or diplomatic missions directly. These official channels do not charge for appointment bookings and do not influence visa decisions. It is important to remember that accredited visa companies cannot guarantee a positive outcome, as consulates base their decisions on individual travel history and other factors.

Experts advise checking company reviews and ratings and carefully reviewing contracts to ensure clarity on services, procedures, and pricing. Avoid services offered without a contract or requiring payment to a private individual. Planning visa applications well in advance, ideally six months before the trip, can help avoid the need for “fixers” and ensure a smoother process.
