A nine-year-old boy was seriously injured in Uralmash this morning after being struck by a car while crossing the road in an undesignated area. The incident occurred near house number 55 on Kalinina Street.
The Yekaterinburg State Traffic Inspectorate reported that the child was hospitalized with broken legs. The accident involved a 39-year-old Ford driver.
The driver, a local resident, was found to have 0.280 mg/l of alcohol in his exhaled air. He admitted to police that he had been drinking the day before while fishing. Two administrative protocols were issued against him for drunk driving and lack of insurance.
The boy’s mother stated that she was walking in the yard with her younger children when her son went to the store with friends. She could not explain why he chose to cross the road in an undesignated location.
Authorities will be inspecting the boy’s school to assess their instruction on safe road behavior. Furthermore, the case will be referred to the Juvenile Affairs Department and the territorial commission to determine if the mother should be held administratively responsible for inadequate parental supervision.
Traffic police are reminding motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, even with a hangover, due to impaired reaction times and coordination.
