A 41-year-old resident of Petergof is facing a criminal case for vandalism after allegedly defacing bronze elements of memorials at the Serafimovskoe Cemetery in St. Petersburg. The incident, which involved painting bronze details on several monuments, prompted a police investigation and subsequent detention.
Law enforcement officials were alerted to the damage on May 27, after an unknown individual painted a seagull and an anchor on the Kursk crew memorial, as well as a wreath on the memorial to submarine officers who died on the Losharik submarine. The bronze elements were covered with paint.
The Agra company, responsible for maintaining the cemetery, reported that they initially reprimanded the man, but he ignored their warnings. Subsequently, law enforcement was contacted, leading to the detention of the 41-year-old suspect.
During questioning, the man claimed to be a restorer but could not provide any documentation to support his claim. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the vandalism and the extent of the damage.
By the evening of May 29, the appearance of the monuments had been restored.
