A truck driver is now a suspect in a criminal case following the death of a 55-year-old female cyclist in St. Petersburg. The incident, which occurred on the morning of May 30th, has led to an investigation under Article 264, part four of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which addresses violations of traffic regulations and vehicle operation.

The driver could face a prison sentence ranging from five to twelve years if convicted.

The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region reported that a MAZ truck was traveling along Sovetsky Prospekt. While making a left turn onto a construction site, the truck struck the cyclist. The woman died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

Video footage of the incident indicates that the cyclist entered the roadway from the sidewalk. She appeared to attempt braking but was unable to avoid the collision and ended up under the truck.
