Investigation launched into damage to sculpture on Kirillovs’ tenement building

Authorities are investigating the damage to a sculpture on the Kirillovs’ tenement building in St. Petersburg’s Petrogradsky district. The incident involves unknown individuals who covered the head of the statue of a young man with colorful material.

The Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the city announced the launch of a procedural review under the criminal article addressing damage to cultural heritage sites.

The statue, situated in a niche at the entrance of building 3 on Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street, was targeted by unknown individuals who constructed a motley head for it out of a material resembling plasticine. On June 10, the head was covered with a bag.

LLC “ZhKS No. 2 of the Petrogradsky District” has filed a statement with the police to identify and bring the vandals to justice. The consequences will be addressed after the conclusion of the investigation.

Authorities are currently working to identify eyewitnesses and individuals involved in the incident. Anyone who witnessed the event is asked to contact the duty officer of the department.

A major overhaul of the facade, including restoration of decorative elements, is scheduled for 2026. The Committee for State Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of St. Petersburg had previously stated they would soon reveal the future fate of the statue.
