A man in the Moscow region is being treated for severe burns after coming into contact with hogweed while mowing his lawn. Alexey, who was working at his dacha, suffered burns across 80% of his body.

The incident occurred when Alexey was mowing the lawn on his property and was exposed to hogweed. He didn’t realize the danger at the time and continued working.

The following day, he noticed redness on his skin and experienced intense itching. His condition worsened overnight, leading to his hospitalization at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute.

Upon arrival, Alexey was admitted to the burn unit, where medical staff treated and bandaged his burns. He was later transferred to the toxicology department for further care.

Doctors are utilizing collagen-based dressings to treat his burn wounds. Surgeon Valery Borisov explained that this method involves cleaning the burn, removing blisters, and applying specialized dressings.

Experts advise caution when dealing with hogweed. Maria Popova, from the “Anti-Hogweed” movement, suggests digging out the plant below the root or cutting off the flowers to prevent further spread.

Hogweed is a known hazard and has infested a significant amount of land in the Moscow region.
