Ship Runs Aground on Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk Territory, Causing Diesel Spill

A vessel ran aground on the Yenisei River in the Kazachinsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory on the evening of June 8, resulting in a significant diesel fuel leak into the water. The pollution has already impacted a 50-kilometer stretch of the shoreline.

The West Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the incident to NGS24.RU. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is currently gathering data to assess the full extent of the damage.

Authorities are working to determine the ownership of the vessel. While one report suggests the ship belongs to the Ob-Irtysh River Shipping Company, this has not been confirmed. Yeniseyrechtrans stated they are assisting with the cleanup efforts, but claim the vessel is not theirs.

In response to the spill, Rospotrebnadzor has ordered additional drinking water checks in Lesosibirsk. Resource supply organizations have been directed to implement “sanitary and anti-epidemic measures.” The Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology is scheduled to collect and test water samples.

Yuri Ozersky, head of the Kazachinsky district, has declared a state of emergency in the affected area. He stated that current efforts have been insufficient to contain the spill, which has already reached the shores of Piskunovka and Momotovo. He estimates that 30 tons of diesel fuel have entered the Yenisei River, calling the incident “expected” due to the dangerous local rapids.
