A citizen of Azerbaijan has been detained in St. Petersburg following a knife attack on his 25-week pregnant girlfriend. The St. Petersburg Investigative Committee is seeking to keep the suspect in custody.

The Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee for St. Petersburg reported the detention on June 9. The suspect had been wanted since May 30 after an incident on Pskovskaya Street.

Police were called to an apartment on Pskovskaya Street at night, where they found a 19-year-old St. Petersburg resident who reported being assaulted by her cohabitant. The young woman stated that her cohabitant, also 19 years old, pressed a knife to her throat and then wounded her in the stomach and leg.

Following the attack, the young man, who has a prior record for robbery, fled the scene. The victim was hospitalized in moderately severe condition, but authorities have stated that her pregnancy is not threatened.

The suspect has been charged with hooliganism, and the investigator will request the court to order his detention. In a video, the defendant admits his guilt and expresses remorse.
