Igor Leitland, 56, has been accused of the 1994 murder of Roman Bakhaev, a leader in the “Tsentr” organized crime group. Bakhaev, nicknamed Puchik, was shot dead in the entrance of his home. Leitland, who denies any involvement, was released without restrictions after a court hearing.
The murder is believed to be linked to internal conflicts within the “Tsentr” group during a period of asset redistribution. At the time of his death, Bakhaev was known for his involvement in show business, providing protection for artists and collecting tribute.
Investigators reopened the 30-year-old case and detained Leitland on June 5 at a local hotel. A witness testimony implicated Leitland, providing details that only an eyewitness would know.
Leitland’s lawyer maintains his client’s innocence, claiming he was slandered. Leitland’s family, including his wife and son, appeared in court to support him, providing character references. He is described as a family man who cares for his 90-year-old mother.
Bakhaev’s murder followed the deaths of other “Tsentr” leaders, marking a turbulent period in the group’s history. Sources suggest that Bakhaev’s assertive nature and claims on other businesses likely contributed to his death.
