From Priest to Librarian: Anton Kovalev’s Unexpected Journey

Anton Kovalev, a former priest, has transitioned back to secular life and now works as a researcher at the State Public Scientific and Technological Library (GPNTB) in Novosibirsk. He studies rare books and ancient texts.

Kovalev’s journey began after university when he became part of an Orthodox youth club and eventually decided to become a priest. He served for over a decade, primarily in Shlyuz, a neighborhood in Novosibirsk.

However, due to family circumstances, specifically a divorce and subsequent remarriage, Kovalev was suspended from his priestly duties. Remarriage is not permitted for priests.

Despite the suspension, Kovalev continues his scientific pursuits at the library, a role he began in 2018 while still serving as a priest. His work involves researching rare books.

One notable discovery during his time at the library was the identification of a psalter printed by Russian first printer Ivan Fedorov in 1570. This psalter is one of only five known copies worldwide and was found in the Novosibirsk Orthodox Theological Seminary.

Kovalev also shared his thoughts on reading habits in the digital age, emphasizing the importance of reading to cultivate critical thinking and discover the world. While he works with paper books, he reads mainly electronic versions due to time and financial constraints. He enjoys science fiction, experimental texts, and classics.
