Severe Weather Causes Havoc in Moscow

Moscow and the surrounding region were hit by a severe downpour on Sunday, causing significant disruptions across the city. The heavy rain flooded a metro station, disrupted airport operations, caused traffic congestion, and damaged gardens with hail.

Komsomolskaya station on the Sokolnicheskaya metro line experienced flooding as water poured from the ceiling of the underground lobby. Passengers captured video of the incident, showing water cascading onto the platform. Although the area was cordoned off, train traffic continued uninterrupted. Authorities stated the leak was minor and quickly resolved.

Vnukovo Airport also suffered damage when part of the terminal roof collapsed due to the heavy rain. Passengers filmed water pouring into the building. The storm and strong winds, with gusts up to 25 m/s, forced the diversion of three flights to alternate airports. The airport resumed normal operations later in the evening.

In Moscow, a Mosvodostok employee was injured when a strong current pulled him into the Chertanovka River collector. He was rescued by the Ministry of Emergency Situations with the help of colleagues and bystanders.

Roads in the city also faced disruptions due to flooding, leading to delays in ground transportation. The Department of Transport advised commuters to exercise caution and listen to driver announcements.

The Moscow region experienced large hail in areas such as Naro-Fominsk and Aprelevka. Residents shared photos of the hailstones.

A storm warning remains in effect for the capital region until 3:00 AM, with the Ministry of Emergency Situations warning of possible wind gusts up to 25 m/s during thunderstorms.
