Dictionaries Still Maintain the Stress on the First Syllable of the Word “Beetroot”

The colloquial pronunciation of the word “beetroot” with the stress on the second syllable may eventually displace the currently accepted pronunciation, according to a philology expert. Maria Kalenchuk, Doctor of Philology and Chief Researcher at the Vinogradov Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shared this observation.

Kalenchuk stated that the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable is more conversational and could become as common as, or even replace, the standard pronunciation in the future.

Currently, dictionaries only recognize the stress on the first syllable as correct, and pronouncing it with stress on the second syllable is not recommended.

This potential shift is not an isolated case. Kalenchuk previously mentioned that the stress in the word “rings/is ringing” might also change over time. She explained that verbs ending in “-ить” have shown a tendency to shift the stress from the ending to the stem over the past century. The change in the word “rings/is ringing” simply began later compared to other words. For now, the correct pronunciation maintains the stress on the second syllable.
