A court in the Leningrad region has opted not to impose a pre-trial restraint measure on a teenager accused of attempting to murder her newborn child; instead, her detention has been extended by 72 hours. The Investigative Committee of the Leningrad Region confirmed this decision on June 7, following charges being filed against the girl and a request from the investigator to place her in custody.
The investigation revealed that the 15-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in an apartment in Dubrovka on June 5. She then placed the infant in a bag and threw her out of a first-floor window.
Authorities believe the mother was aware that the baby was alive, as evidenced by the infant’s cries. Janitors discovered the package containing the newborn around noon.
The baby was immediately transported to a maternity hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition and her life is not threatened.
During questioning, the defendant claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy. However, information suggests she is registered in the Kalininsky district of St. Petersburg and has been living with her boyfriend’s family for the past six months. Preliminary reports indicate that she is not currently enrolled in any educational institution.
Law enforcement sources have characterized the minor’s lifestyle as dissolute.
The Investigative Committee also stated that the investigation will include an assessment of the actions of the teenager’s parents and relevant officials responsible for juvenile delinquency prevention.
