Four seal pups were released into the Gulf of Finland after being rehabilitated by the Baltic Seal Friends Fund. The release, which took place for the second time in 2025, included three male and one female seal, marking a significant step in their journey to independent adult life.
The seal pups were admitted to the fund in April in critical condition. They were emaciated and unable to survive on their own, highlighting the importance of the rehabilitation efforts.
During their time at the fund, the pinnipeds underwent intensive care. They gained the necessary weight, reaching 35-40 kg, and developed the required fat reserves to thrive in the wild.
One of the released seals, Stirudden, was the largest of the group and was found near the cape of the same name. Also released was the Primorsky “Easter seal pup,” which is traditionally admitted to the fund for rehabilitation around Easter.
The first release of seal pups this year occurred on May 15. Currently, the fund is treating and rehabilitating 30 animals.
