Moscow Pediatrician Anastasia Goryainova Released to House Arrest After Bribery Accusations

Anastasia Goryainova, a Moscow pediatrician and expert in cystic fibrosis, has been released from pre-trial detention in Chita and placed under house arrest. This follows her arrest in May on bribery charges related to obtaining an advanced training certificate.

Goryainova, 37, faced accusations of bribing officials to obtain a remote certificate of advanced training last year. According to her relatives, she was allegedly coerced into confessing, with threats of her 14-year-old daughter being taken to an orphanage.

The case originated after the arrest of Mikhail Pudov, chairman of the accreditation commission of healthcare of the Transbaikal Territory, who was accused of taking bribes for issuing accreditations. Goryainova’s defense maintains that the accusations are solely based on Pudov’s testimony, lacking further evidence.

During her detention, Goryainova reportedly experienced health problems due to the poor conditions. Her sister described a harsh environment, including a cold cell and lack of basic necessities. Concerns were raised about the potential long-term impact on her health and well-being.

Goryainova’s expertise in cystic fibrosis is highly valued. After graduating from Pirogov University with degrees in pediatrics and gastroenterology, she worked at the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital (RDKB) and later at the MD Group Clinical Hospital (“Mother and Child”) in Moscow. Her sister stated that Anastasia’s qualifications allowed her to develop therapy, and she began to save children’s lives.

Her lawyer, Evgeny Nesterenko, confirmed that the court overturned the initial decision to keep her in custody.

Other doctors have also reportedly been summoned to Chita as part of the investigation, with concerns raised about a pattern of turning witnesses into accused individuals.
