The Russian national football team’s winning streak ended after a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in a friendly match held at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6. This result interrupts a series of eight consecutive victories for Valery Karpin’s team.
The match saw Russia take the lead in the 27th minute when Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi scored an own goal. However, Nigeria responded in the second half, with Toluwalase Arokodare capitalizing on a mistake by Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to equalize the score.
Arokodare’s goal marked the first time the Russian national team has conceded a goal since their 2-2 draw with Kenya in October 2023.
The friendly was officiated by Azerbaijani referee Aliyar Agayev. Looking ahead, the Russian team is scheduled to play another friendly against Belarus on June 10.
Under the guidance of head coach Valery Karpin, the national team has played a total of 23 matches, securing 16 wins, six draws, and suffering only one defeat.
