Magnit Considers Selling Hypermarkets, Lenta May Be the Buyer

Magnit is reportedly exploring the sale of its hypermarkets, with Lenta emerging as a potential buyer. Sources within the retail market indicate that Magnit is looking to divest its large-format stores, including both hypermarkets and supermarkets, to concentrate on developing smaller, convenience store formats.

Lenta is reportedly evaluating the acquisition of Magnit’s hypermarkets, though the specifics of a potential deal, such as which locations might be involved, remain unclear.

The trend of Magnit reducing its large-format footprint has been ongoing. In 2024, 31 stores were closed, and in the first four months of 2025, more than ten additional closures occurred. Concurrently, Lenta is actively seeking expansion opportunities and had considered purchasing the O’Key hypermarket chain, a deal that has not yet been finalized.

Magnit operates approximately 30,000 stores across Russia. As of March of this year, the total area of its large-format stores reached 922.6 thousand square meters. The estimated value of Magnit’s hypermarkets and supermarkets is around 100 billion rubles, or, alternatively, between 45-75 thousand rubles per square meter.

Both Magnit and Lenta have declined to comment on the matter.
