New Sports Complex Planned Near Gazprom Arena on Krestovsky Island

A new sports complex is potentially being developed on Krestovsky Island near the Gazprom Arena stadium by Sport City LLC, a company associated with the Pushkin Run running community. The company, linked to Legislative Assembly deputy Dmitry Pavlov, aims to construct the complex on a plot of land at 25B Yuzhnaya Road, replacing a previously failed hotel project attempt.

The proposed complex is designed to be a multifunctional sports facility, offering various amenities for athletes and the community. Dmitry Pavlov envisions an “extraordinary sports complex” featuring a swimming pool, tennis area, and a dedicated “running hub.” This hub will include a hall for general physical training, stretching, aerobics, and lectures on health and sports, providing a dedicated space for Pushkin Run participants to prepare for competitions.

Sport City LLC submitted a notification to the Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture (KGA) in late May, initiating the process of amending the land planning project (PPT). The adjustments are necessary to facilitate the construction of the sports complex on the 0.93-hectare plot, which is currently a wasteland used as a starting point for Pushkin Run races. The deadline for preparing the PPT changes is set for one year.

The land at 25B Yuzhnaya Road has a complex history. In 2010, it was allocated to Metall Trade for the construction of an indoor gymnastics complex, but the project never materialized. Sport City LLC acquired the property in 2014, demolished the existing building in 2018, and later privatized the site.

Dmitry Pavlov emphasized that the new project will focus solely on sports, with no plans for a hotel. The project aims to address the current “spartan conditions” faced by athletes preparing for competitions outdoors. The exact dimensions and parameters of the complex will be determined after the PPT is adjusted.

The development of the sports complex follows a series of property-related events on Krestovsky Island. The Sport Palace sports complex, built without proper authorization, was eventually destroyed by fire in 2024. Additionally, authorities are currently seeking to terminate the lease agreement for the SunDay Ginza restaurant on Yuzhnaya Road and have addressed issues related to unauthorized outdoor sports equipment on the beach of the Malaya Nevka.
