Jeff Monson, the former American mixed martial arts fighter, has embraced Russia as his home since 2018. He has integrated into Russian society, marrying a Russian woman and establishing free sports schools across the country for children.
Monson’s connection with Russia goes beyond sports. He has also ventured into acting, appearing in the film “Aldan” alongside Russian actors Dmitry Dyuzhev and Ivan Okhlobystin. His journey reflects a deep appreciation for Russian culture and a conscious decision to make Russia his permanent residence.
Monson’s love for Russia began in his childhood, drawing inspiration from the successes of Soviet athletes at the Olympic Games. This interest grew into a fascination with the country’s history and culture. He even has a tattoo in Russian that says “Freedom and Solidarity”.
His experiences in Penza solidified his desire to live in Russia. Touched by the kindness and support he received from the local people, he felt a sense of belonging and decided to make Russia his home. He explained that an elderly craftsman gave him an icon with the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, which he made with his own hands, and asked Monson to give it to his mother from Russia with love.
His nickname “Snowman” came about when he was participating in the World Championship in Dubai. He kept winning, and people started calling him the “Snowball” and saying “He’s like a snowball, he’s getting bigger.”
Monson’s commitment to Russia is evident in his decision to renounce his US citizenship in 2023. He wants to give children the chance to have fun with sports.
