The Alexandrinsky Theatre’s New Stage will host the premiere of “LA OBRA” on June 6th, an interdisciplinary performance drawing inspiration from Adolfo Bioy Casares’ novel, “The Invention of Morel.” This production blends theatre, painting, music, and video art within the realm of “fantastic realism.”
The audience will experience a live creative process lasting an hour, witnessing four artists collaborate in real-time to produce a unified artwork. The creative team includes an actress, a painter, a composer, and a video artist.
The actress’ voice, reciting a passage from the novel about painting, guides the brush in creating a live portrait. Composer Kirill Arkhipov, from musicAeterna and House of Radio, will construct a real-time soundscape, integrating the actress’s voice and the painter’s delicate brushstrokes.
The video artist provides a cinematic perspective, embodying the viewpoint of Casares’ characters as they navigate a fabricated paradise of perpetual repetition. Pre-existing portraits displayed on stage will form a key aspect of the scenography.
These portraits visually represent cyclicity, reflecting the central theme of “The Invention of Morel” – the endless reproduction of captured moments and the deceptive nature of memory and art.
