A community in Nizhnyaya Yeltsovka, Siberia, has constructed and maintains a staircase in a local forest, affectionately known as “Stepan’s Staircase.” The staircase, built to ease a steep and slippery descent, is a testament to the residents’ initiative and community spirit.
The project was initiated by Alexander Vlasov, a local resident, and named after the son of Roman Kuznetsov, another key contributor. The staircase provides a safer and more convenient path for residents, athletes, and visitors who frequent the area year-round.
Roman Kuznetsov, originally from Kazakhstan, has embraced Nizhnyaya Yeltsovka as his home and was inspired to dedicate the staircase to his son, Stepan, born in 2018. While the initial sign caused some confusion, it was later clarified to “Stepan’s Staircase,” solidifying its unique identity.
Alexander Vlasov, despite not being a professional builder, contributed his skills and resources, including metal scraps from his workplace. The staircase features railings and a solid structure, ensuring a safer passage.
The community’s involvement extends beyond the initial construction. Residents regularly maintain the staircase, repairing damages, applying fresh paint, and clearing snow and ice during the winter months. The annual celebration on May 19, coinciding with Stepan’s birthday, has become a tradition, solidifying the staircase’s significance to the community.
