The 19th Interregional Folk Festival “Lud,” a celebration of Komi-Izhemtsy culture, will take place in the village of Izhma, Komi Republic, from July 5th to 6th. The festival is a key symbol of the cultural identity of the Komi-Izhemtsy, a unique group of the Komi people known for their distinct dialect, traditions, costumes, and way of life.
The “Lud” festival, held in the scenic area between the Izhma and Kurya rivers, will feature a diverse program. Attendees can enjoy dance processions, traditional meadow games, master classes, and sample national cuisine. A festive fair will also be a major part of the event.
The festival’s roots can be traced back to ancient customs. Historically, local residents would gather “to walk in the meadows” before the haymaking season began. The name “lud” itself means “meadow” in the Komi language.
Today, the festival serves as a vibrant revival of ancient rituals, where participants engage in traditional round dances and don traditional clothing. Admission to the festival is free.
