Former Central Bank Official May Be Sent to Psychiatric Hospital After Tragedy

Alexander Lipatov, a former department head at the Central Bank, is likely to be committed to a psychiatric hospital following an incident in August 2024 where he allegedly threw his wife and one-year-old child out of their apartment window. Lipatov has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which authorities believe played a significant role in the tragic events.

On August 25 of the previous year, Lipatov reportedly threw his wife, Milena, and their one-year-old son, Mikhail, out of a window during a domestic dispute. Following the act, the 39-year-old man barricaded himself inside the apartment, prompting authorities to storm the premises. He was found unconscious and later claimed to have heard “voices” instructing him to harm his family.

After the incident, Lipatov was transported to the toxicology department of the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine and placed in a coma. It is believed that he had ingested a large quantity of pills prior to the altercation with his family.

Upon regaining consciousness several days later, tests revealed no traces of alcohol or narcotics in Lipatov’s system. The tests indicated the presence of antidepressants and female postpartum hormonal medications.

Subsequently, Lipatov was transferred to the acute poisoning department of a mental hospital, where he was restrained. He received an official diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Currently, Lipatov is in custody, and charges have been filed against him. However, it is anticipated that he will avoid a prison sentence due to his mental condition.

According to the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office, a comprehensive psychological and psychiatric evaluation concluded that Lipatov suffers from a chronic mental disorder and was unable to comprehend the nature and social implications of his actions or control them at the time of the crime. The supervisory authority stated that Lipatov requires mandatory medical treatment in a specialized inpatient psychiatric facility.

The criminal case has been forwarded to the Moscow City Court for consideration.
