Authorities have concluded their investigation into the Yenisei River oil spill, revealing that 79.3 tons of diesel fuel contaminated the waterway, resulting in 1.2 billion rubles in damages. Yulia Gumenyuk, First Deputy Minister of Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, announced the findings on July 18.
The investigation focused on the Ob-Irtysh River Shipping Company, whose vessel was responsible for the accident and subsequent fuel spill. Administrative protocols were issued against the organization for violations under Part 4 of Article 8.13 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (violation of requirements for the protection of water bodies, which may lead to their pollution) and Article 8.6 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (damage to land).
The shipping company has been instructed to remediate the spill’s effects by September and remit full compensation for the damages to the state budget within one month.
The diesel fuel spill originated from a puncture in the ship’s hull while it was towing barges in early June. The incident took place in the Kazachinsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Approximately 30 tons of petroleum products initially leaked into the river. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the vessel struck rapids, damaging the steering and fuel tank, before being grounded. No injuries or fatalities were reported, and navigation was not disrupted, but the oil slick extended for 7 kilometers.
A second oil spill occurred on June 21 during the salvage operation of a sunken vessel near the Kazachinsky rapids. Responders worked overnight to contain the spread of the spill using booms and absorbent materials.
