St. Petersburg to Create a List of Safe Swimming Locations

St. Petersburg authorities are compiling a list of locations deemed suitable for swimming, considering factors beyond just water quality. Vice Governor Alexey Korabelnikov announced the initiative, emphasizing a comprehensive evaluation process.

The assessment will include the presence of rescue infrastructure, bottom conditions, and potential hazards on the shore. The goal is to consolidate this information into a single, accessible document.

Addressing the dynamic nature of water quality, Korabelnikov explained that conditions can fluctuate based on usage and environmental factors. While a water body might initially meet safety standards, it can quickly become unsuitable after heavy use. Rainfall, on the other hand, can improve water clarity.

Korabelnikov advises residents to prioritize locations with adequate infrastructure and heed recommendations from Rospotrebnadzor, the consumer protection agency. He personally suggests swimming in the lakes of the Leningrad Region as a preferable alternative to city waters.

Currently, only one of 24 beaches in St. Petersburg meets sanitary standards according to Rospotrebnadzor. The city aims to improve swimming safety by identifying and preparing suitable locations.
