Severe Weather Hits St. Petersburg Causing Damage

St. Petersburg experienced a brief but intense period of severe weather, including heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail, resulting in downed trees and damaged vehicles. The city’s parks and squares also suffered losses.

The Petrogradsky District was particularly affected, with hurricane-force winds and thunderstorms felling large trees near the Museum of Political History of Russia. One eyewitness reported that lightning split a tree in Alexandrovsky Park, and several others were uprooted.

Near the Gorkovskaya metro station, a large tree was uprooted, while on Uralskaya Street near the Betancourt Bridge, a fallen tree blocked a portion of the road.

On Gavanskaya Street, a parked car narrowly avoided being crushed by a falling tree. However, another vehicle on Bolshaya Raznochinnaya Street was completely covered by a tree trunk.

The Committee for the Improvement of St. Petersburg noted that several trees were lost in the city’s parks and squares, including a willow in Polezhaevsky Park, a bird cherry on Pogranichnika Garkavogo Street, and several trees in Sosnovaya Polyana park. A silver willow in the Sampsonievsky Garden also did not survive. The committee emphasized that communal services are working to address the aftermath of the storm and urged residents to be cautious.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of St. Petersburg reported that fire and rescue units responded to 19 incidents related to the strong winds on July 31, with the majority of calls involving fallen trees.
