Expansion of Reasons for Revocation of Acquired Russian Citizenship

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law broadening the grounds for the annulment of acquired Russian citizenship. The legislation, published on the official portal for legal acts on July 31, introduces a range of new conditions under which individuals may lose their Russian passport.

The law lists more than twenty additional crimes and activities that could lead to the revocation of Russian citizenship.

Included among the offenses are sexual crimes involving violence, public support for terrorism, and secret collaboration with foreign entities to undermine Russian security.

The legislation also covers assisting foreign entities in actions threatening Russian security, inciting such activities, promoting Nazi symbols, and illegally interfering with critical state information infrastructure.

Furthermore, citizenship can be revoked for murder, lewd acts against children, sexual relations with minors, involving adolescents in prostitution, producing child pornography, and using children to create pornographic materials.

Other offenses leading to revocation include group rapes or violent sexual acts committed with particular cruelty, infecting others with venereal diseases as a result of such acts, coercing minors into sexual acts, and organizing illegal migration.

Any crimes committed for extremist motives or to justify terrorism and subversive activities will also constitute grounds for deprivation of citizenship.

The new provisions are scheduled to take effect ten days following their official publication.
