Series of Earthquakes Strike Kamchatka, Triggering Tsunami Alerts Across Pacific

A series of earthquakes, including one of the strongest in the region in decades, struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on July 30, prompting tsunami alerts across the Pacific. Eleven earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 4.5 to 5.7, were recorded within a single hour.

The Chilean National Emergency Agency (Senapred) issued a high alert for a possible tsunami, recommending that residents evacuate coastal areas in the Antarctic part of the country. Authorities in New Zealand also warned coastal residents about potentially dangerous currents and unpredictable tides.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) initially issued an alert for Hawaii but later canceled it, stating that wave heights had decreased to safe levels. The PTWC cautioned that minor sea level fluctuations and strong currents could persist for several hours.

The strongest earthquake, registering a magnitude of 8.7, occurred in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 360 km northeast of Severo-Kurilsk, at a depth of 17 km. This was the strongest earthquake to hit the Far East since 1952.

Following the earthquake, reports indicate that the Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka began to erupt. Chilean authorities reported no casualties or damage on the coast following the evacuation.
