Nostalgic Recollections of Childhood Games and Traditions in Russia

Modern children are often perceived as being immersed in the digital world, but memories of traditional yard games and childhood folklore remain vivid for many Russians. These recollections offer a glimpse into a time when outdoor play and social interaction were central to growing up.

Various games fostered camaraderie and physical activity. “Cossacks and Robbers,” a popular game, involved two teams engaging in a pursuit, with “robbers” leaving clues for the “Cossacks” to follow, and captured robbers being held in a “prison.” The “elastic band” game, particularly favored by girls, required agility and coordination as players jumped over an elastic band stretched at different heights. Boys often engaged in activities such as crafting homemade weapons and competing in accuracy.

Traditional yard life also involved unwritten rules and social dynamics. While fights were common, there were codes of conduct, such as avoiding ganging up on individuals or attacking those who had already fallen. Gambling, although frowned upon by authorities, was a common pastime, with children playing card games or coin-tossing games for small stakes.

Beyond games, children created their own special worlds and rituals. “Secrets” involved burying treasured items with a friend, creating a sense of unity and shared experience. Building huts from found materials was another popular activity, providing children with a space to create their own havens.

Childhood folklore and traditions continue to evolve. Even today, games like “Zombies” are played in summer camps, and pranks like smearing toothpaste on faces during “Royal Night” persist.
