Increased Street Watering Due to Anomalous Heat in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg’s municipal services have ramped up street watering efforts due to the ongoing heatwave, utilizing up to 10,000 cubic meters of water daily, the highest volume this season.

The heightened irrigation aims to prevent asphalt deformation caused by the elevated temperatures and improve street conditions for residents. The fine spraying of water helps to cool the air and ease breathing in the sweltering weather.

According to the Governor’s press service, clean drinking water is being used for the watering process. The water is dispersed in wide jets, covering roadways and adjacent green spaces. Flower beds and parks are watered separately using filled barrels.

The total water volume includes standard road cleaning, with enhanced treatment of areas surrounding metro stations, bus stops, cafes, and garbage bins. These areas are cleaned using detergents.

Since the beginning of the season, nearly 1.1 million cubic meters of water have been used for street cleaning. Currently, over 500 pieces of equipment and almost a thousand municipal workers are deployed.

Earlier in the week, the city’s chief meteorologist, Alexander Kolesov, had predicted Wednesday to be the hottest day of the week, with air temperatures expected to reach 32-33 degrees Celsius, creating conditions for extreme heat.
