New Amendments to Russian Law Threaten Bloggers with Fines for Advertising on Banned Platforms

Russian bloggers and social media users are facing potential fines and career disruptions due to upcoming amendments to the law, slated to take effect as early as September 1st. The new regulations target advertising on platforms that have been banned in the Russian Federation, including Instagram and Facebook (both designated as extremist organizations and prohibited within the country).

The implications extend to all users of these prohibited social networks, regardless of audience size.

Experts suggest that bloggers will likely adapt to the new restrictions rather than abandon the platforms altogether. Strategies include consulting with lawyers to understand the nuances of the law and diversifying their presence on other social media platforms to maintain audience reach.

According to SMM specialist Yulia Ryzhaya, bloggers can continue to operate on banned networks by adhering to specific guidelines, such as avoiding overt promotion of individual products or services.

To circumvent the advertising restrictions, experts advise bloggers to shift towards informative content, such as reviews. By presenting products in a neutral context without highlighting specific features, promotions, or purchase links, bloggers can avoid being flagged for advertising.

Collaborations with other bloggers can continue through emotional storytelling, focusing on personal experiences rather than product attributes. Simply tagging a favorite establishment without explicitly praising its merits is also permissible.

The expert emphasizes that it is essential to recognize the risks and act accordingly, as the majority of penalties are reportedly triggered by complaints from ordinary citizens, including a blogger’s own followers.

Lawyers warn that all social media users are subject to the new law, and anyone creating content risks facing penalties.
