Police are warning parents to be vigilant about their children’s phone activity due to a new scam targeting schoolchildren. Fraudsters are deceiving children into divulging SMS codes under the guise of medical examinations or tests.
The scheme involves scammers impersonating medical professionals, such as polyclinic employees or school nurses. They contact children, claiming they need to undergo a medical check-up or take tests via online registration.
The fraudsters then trick the children into revealing the code they receive in an SMS message. This allows the scammers to potentially access personal information or financial accounts linked to the phone number.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is urging parents to monitor their children’s phones and restrict their access to suspicious applications and websites in order to prevent them from falling victim to these scams.
Authorities have also previously reported that teenagers are often involved in “dropping,” which can make them accomplices in crimes. Additionally, scammers are known to target shoppers through online marketplaces.
