Investigation into Railway Infrastructure Attacks in Bryansk and Kursk Regions Classified as Terrorism

The Investigative Committee has classified recent attacks on railway infrastructure in the Bryansk and Kursk regions as terrorist acts following incidents between May 31 and June 1. The attacks, which involved explosions on railway sections and bridge structures, led to the derailment of passenger, freight, and diagnostic trains.

According to Svetlana Petrenko, an official representative, the perpetrators acted under the direction of Ukraine, meticulously planning the attacks to inflict harm on civilians. The explosions resulted in seven fatalities and injuries to 113 individuals, including children.

Initial investigations have recovered fragments of explosive devices and other material evidence. Authorities aim to identify and prosecute those responsible for organizing and carrying out these crimes.

On May 31, an automobile bridge collapsed on the Pilshino – Vygonichi railway section in the Bryansk region as passenger train No. 86 Klimovo – Moscow passed underneath. The train collided with the debris, causing carriages to derail.

In the Kursk region on June 1, a railway bridge on the Ostapovo – Mikhailovsky Rudnik section in the Zheleznogorsky district was targeted. A train traversing the bridge at the time was impacted and fell onto the highway, subsequently igniting the locomotive.

Later that morning, another explosion occurred in the Bryansk region on the Unecha-Zhecha section while a track measuring train was passing. No casualties were reported in this incident.

Early reports from May 1 indicated that the train crashes were the result of explosions. Injured individuals were hospitalized, with many transported to the capital for treatment, and efforts were initiated to restore train traffic promptly.
