St. Petersburg is experiencing an influx of fledglings, young birds learning to fly and beginning independent lives. These birds are frequently observed on the ground.
Authorities are advising the public not to rescue these fledglings, despite the potential dangers they face. The Committee for Nature Management issued guidance on June 3rd outlining the proper conduct when encountering these young birds.
Examples of fledglings commonly seen include chicks of crows, sparrows, and gulls.
City lakes and ponds are also home to numerous chicks, easily visible on the water, including coots.
