Ksenia Sobchak’s proposal to legally prohibit men under 30 from marrying has ignited a debate, with prominent figures like Roza Syabitova, Marina Semenova, and State Duma members expressing their disagreement. Sobchak, a TV presenter and journalist, believes that men under 30 are not mature enough for marriage, claiming they “think with their hormones” and are not ready for relationships.
Roza Syabitova, co-host of “Let’s Get Married,” countered Sobchak’s argument, emphasizing that age does not determine marital success and that everything is “too individual.” Syabitova believes that a shared life project, including jointly acquired property and children, is what unites a family, regardless of age.
Marina Semenova, President of the All-Russian Union of Public Organizations for Working with Large Families, also voiced her opposition to Sobchak’s proposed restrictions. She highlighted that many young people are ready for marriage, willing to sacrifice personal interests and time for their families. Semenova also pointed out the importance of early marriages for demographic reasons, as couples are more likely to have multiple children if they start a family sooner.
Nina Ostanina, head of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Paternity, Motherhood and Childhood, advised Sobchak to refrain from making recommendations to young people and stated that adults should be free to make their own decisions about marriage. Deputy Vitaly Milonov dismissed Sobchak’s statement as a “funny story,” suggesting she lacks experience with real men under 30.
Maria Pogrebnyak, a producer and friend of Olga Buzova, also disagreed with Sobchak, asserting that men at 30 are generally adult, independent, and self-sufficient. She used her 18-year-old son as an example of a young man with a clear understanding of life, while also noting that some men remain immature even at 50, while others serving in the army demonstrate bravery and self-realization at a young age.
