Coral-like Mushrooms Discovered in Ordynsky District

Coral-like mushrooms have been discovered in the Ordynsky district of the Novosibirsk region, resembling “deer antlers.” A local resident, Vera Lebedeva, shared photos of the unusual find in a social media group dedicated to mushrooming and fishing in the region, noting they were found on May 29th.

The mushrooms, found in a birch grove on a moss-covered, rotten tree, were identified as Artomyces pyxidatus, a common early summer species. Mycologist Tatyana Bulionkova explained that this species is distinguished by its characteristic teeth at the tips of its branches, resembling a crown, and its translucent flesh. It grows on fallen wood rather than soil.

While not poisonous, Artomyces pyxidatus is considered to have no nutritional value. Bulionkova suggests that the mushroom is best admired for its photogenic qualities.

The appearance of these coral-like mushrooms raises hopes for the emergence of other, more sought-after edible varieties like Suillus and Leccinum in June. These mushrooms typically appear later in the summer and autumn, making confusion with Artomyces pyxidatus unlikely.

Earlier in May, another unusual mushroom, Sarcosoma globosum, which is listed in the Red Book of Russia, was also spotted in the Novosibirsk region.
