New GOST Standard for School Uniforms Emphasizes Secularism, Aesthetics, and Comfort

Russia’s new GOST standard for school uniforms, set to take effect on July 1st, emphasizes secularism, aesthetic appeal, and comfort. The standard aims to ensure that clothing for students in general, basic general, and secondary general education programs meets specific criteria.

The requirements stipulate that school uniforms should have a businesslike style and a cut that allows for comfortable movement, whether the student is sitting at a desk or moving around the classroom.

Notably, the standard explicitly prohibits the inclusion of symbols associated with “anti-social informal youth associations” or those that “promote illegal behavior.” In contrast, the GOST standard recommends incorporating state and patriotic symbols into the uniform design.

The document specifies that fittings on school uniforms must be functional and free of sharp edges to ensure student safety and comfort. Footwear and sportswear are explicitly excluded from the scope of this standard.

Although GOST certification is generally voluntary, it becomes mandatory for manufacturers or contractors who publicly claim their products adhere to the national standard.
